Mission 6 · Spotting a fake image

Bring your feelings to every experience

CitiZen Six, The Solar Monk

The Aithority has published a photograph that never happened. Your job is to prove it, detail by detail.

The briefing

The reading · They aim at your feelings, never at your eyes

Hey. Sit down. Breathe once before you look at anything.

Here is the whole skill, and I will give you the whole skill in one line. A fake is built to make you feel something before you look. The picture is the delivery. The feeling is the weapon.

Making a convincing fake used to take a specialist a week. Now anyone makes one in a few seconds, for nothing, on a phone. Your instinct says a photo means a thing happened. Your instinct grew up in a world where fakes were rare and costly. Those days have gone, and the people building fakes are counting on your instinct staying put. You've got to put on your singlasses and your critical mind to get this one.

So. Two habits.

First habit. Strong feeling, then stop.

Anger arriving in under a second is a designed effect. Same with disgust, same with fear. A person shaking with rage shares a post and checks later, if at all. A person who pauses finds the crack.

Notice the feeling, name the feeling, and treat the feeling as a reason to slow down. Hardest skill in this course. Also the one you will use most.

Second habit. Go small.

A generator handles the overall impression beautifully and falls apart in the corners. A camera gets small things right by accident, because a camera records a real place where physics applied. A generator is assembling something resembling a photo, and resemblance fails under a close look.

Work in sections rather than staring at the whole frame. Count fingers on a hand. Read background text letter by letter. Check whether two clocks agree. Check whether a cup rests on a table or floats a little above. Check whether a reflection matches the people standing in front of a window.

Daisy spotted her first fake because of a shadow. One shadow, pointing the wrong way, in a photo designed to make her hate a neighbour she had known since childhood. She almost shared the photo. Almost. Then she looked properly, and a whole false world came apart in her hands.

Your mission today is a broadcast the Aithority published as evidence. Five errors, minimum. Find more if you can.

Be specific. "The hands look wrong" is a feeling. "The man on the left has six fingers" is a finding. Only one of those survives an argument.

One last thing, and this matters for the mission after mine.

Everything you have learned to doubt today can be generated. The picture, the caption, the date, the official-looking layout, all of a piece and all fakeable. Your badges work differently, and next mission you will see exactly why.

And remember. You've got to fight...for your right...to party.

⚠ Double Agent Warning — the emotion trigger

The most effective fakes are not the most realistic ones. They are the ones that arrive when you are tired, and that make you angry at someone you already distrust.

The rule: strong feeling, then stop. Anything designed to make you react instantly is designed to stop you thinking.

Before you pass on an image that upset you, find one other source. If it really happened, that will take seconds. If you cannot find one, you have your answer.

Your mission · Spot the Glitch

A news broadcast still showing a dim room with three people around a long table, a glowing monitor, two wall clocks, a neon poster and a window looking onto a rainy neon skyline.
Aithority broadcast, published as evidence. Look closely and take your time. Swipe across the image to see all of it.

You do not need the terminal for this mission — everything above is done on this page and in your GetSmart account.
